Romania before Romania

The name Romania was that of the Eastern Roman Empire. There is an interesting inscription at Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica) written on a terracotta roof tile dated from 582 AD

The text in Medieval Greek reads

which reads as:


Christ, our Lord, help our city halt the Avars. Protect Romania (‘Ρωμανίαν), and he who was written this. Amen.


That was the very last inscription found from the Roman Empire anywhere on the Lower Danube
